French shipping company CMA CGM has placed an order for 22 containerships with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The deal is worth $2.3 billion, hence making it the largest single containership order in China’s shipbuilding history.
The order consists of three classes of vessels: 6 LNG-powered containerships with a capacity of 13,000 TEUs, 6 LNG-powered ships with a capacity of 15,000 TEUs, as well as 10 VLSFO-powered containerships with a capacity of 5,500 TEUs.
CSSC announced the construction work will be split between the company’s subsidiaries Jiangnan Shipyard, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry.
Under the agreement, the vessels will be delivered between 2023 and 2024.
