According to China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a record 230 million trips were taken in the country during the Labour Day holiday. As stated by CNBC, during the five-day break number of bookings tripled from the same period a year ago, and rose more than 30% from 2019.
Overall, during the holiday Chinese consumers spent a total of 113.23 billion yuan ($17.48 billion). Despite the record number of bookings, total spending fell short of 2019 year’s expenditure by approximately 4 billion yuan.
CNBC notes this year’s boom in domestic travelling has been caused by the ongoing restrictions keeping Chinese from travelling abroad.
