A new policy will ban imports of all solid waste, starting in January 2021

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced import ban on all solid waste, noting that it will not accept or approve any import applications from January 1, 2021 onwards.

The Chinese government has been implementing a waste import ban program and solid waste import management reform since 2017. As a result of a three-year action plan, the country was able to drastically reduce imports of solid waste. In contrast to 2016, this year’s figures are down by 70%.

As stated by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Commerce, and the General Administration of Customs, dumping, stacking and disposal of any form of solid waste from overseas will be banned in China.

In addition, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced it will no longer be accepting and reviewing license applications for import of solid waste as raw materials.
