Beyond Meat brings production of plant-based minced-pork to China
Beyond Meat presented its Chinese consumers with its new innovative plant-based ground pork, which is known to be popular in Asian cuisine. The LA-based company has developed the product specifically for China, which is now available at five Shanghai restaurants although for a limited time only.
Beyond Meat is known for its vegan Beyond Burgers, and whilst it has produced plant-based pork sausages in the past, it is the first time the company has created a market-specific product based on Chinese cuisine.
Earlier this year, the company announced a partnership with Chinese retail giant Alibaba, expressing its intention to get its burgers on supermarket shelves in China. Moreover, Beyond Meat signed a deal with Sinodis, a local distributor, to promote its products across restaurants and cafes.
Plant-based pork alternative may have a positive effect on Chinese consumer market given the last year’s outbreak of African swine fever, which affected pork supply in China. In addition, since the COVID-19 pandemic, local consumers have been considering plant-based substitutes due to food safety incidents.
